Rotman Professor Named as Management Thinker to Watch by Thinkers50

Toron­to, ON – A pro­fes­sor at the Uni­ver­si­ty of Toronto’s Rot­man School of Man­age­ment who has become known for his research and teach­ing on cat­a­stro­phes and risk man­age­ment has been named to the 2017 Thinkers50 Radar list of the 30 man­age­ment thinkers in the world most like­ly to shape the future of how orga­ni­za­tions are man­aged and led.

András Tilc­sik is an Assis­tant Pro­fes­sor of Strate­gic Man­age­ment and a Fel­low at the School’s Michael Lee-Chin Fam­i­ly Insti­tute for Cor­po­rate Cit­i­zen­ship.

Last year he was rec­og­nized as one of the Top 40 Under 40 busi­ness school pro­fes­sors in the world by the busi­ness school news site Poets&Quants and was also named a Change Agent by Cana­di­an Busi­ness mag­a­zine.  He was the win­ner of the Brack­en Bow­er Prize in 2015 pre­sent­ed annu­al­ly by the Finan­cial Times and McK­in­sey for the best busi­ness book pro­pos­al by an author under the age of 35, along with his co-author Christo­pher Clearfield, The result­ing book, Melt­down, an exam­i­na­tion of the com­mon fac­tors that con­tribute to cat­a­stro­phes across indus­tries from finance to avi­a­tion to med­i­cine, which offers solu­tions for busi­ness­es and indi­vid­u­als, will be pub­lished by Pen­guin Press in 2018.

Prof. Tilcsik’s research also includes the orga­ni­za­tion­al aspects of work, employ­ment, and occu­pa­tions and has been pub­lished in lead­ing schol­ar­ly jour­nals, cit­ed in tes­ti­monies to com­mit­tees of the U.S. Con­gress, and rec­og­nized with awards from the Amer­i­can Soci­o­log­i­cal Asso­ci­a­tion. At the Rot­man School, he has devel­oped “Cat­a­stroph­ic Fail­ure in Orga­ni­za­tions,” an award-win­ning elec­tive course, which he teach­es to MBA and Rot­man Com­merce stu­dents. A native of Hun­gary, he com­plet­ed his Ph.D., A.M., and A.B. at Har­vard Uni­ver­si­ty.
