August 15, 2017

Toronto, ON – With the pace of change in healthcare and the life sciences sector accelerating at unprecedented rates, a new Executive MBA program from the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management aims to prepare working professionals in the sector to lead their organizations, businesses and health systems.

The Global Executive MBA in Healthcare & the Life Sciences is an 18-month program which offers an innovative curriculum that combines core management skills and practical engagement with deep self-development insights and strategic know-how, all designed for professionals working in the healthcare and life sciences sector. The program, which begins in 2018, will be delivered in five modules, three in Toronto, one in the San Francisco Bay area and one in Singapore. The program is designed for experienced mid-to-senior professionals (managers, administrators, clinicians, and scientists) from life science firms, service delivery organizations, and agencies around the world who seek to advance their leadership careers.

“The program will focus on the most effective ways of organizing industries, whether in the public sector or the private sector to deliver the best healthcare and to make it more affordable,” says Prof. Brian R. Golden, Vice-Dean, MBA Programs who holds the Sandra Rotman Chair in Health Sector Strategy at The University of Toronto & The University Health Network and is the co-academic director of the program.

“The health and life sciences sector is the most important industry in the world. Globally it has a huge impact on economic development and a huge impact on human life. Our new program will teach general management and leadership skills, with direct application to people working in life sciences and healthcare,” says Prof. William Mitchell, who holds the Anthony S. Fell Chair in New Technologies and Commercialization and is a co-academic director of the program.

The program leverages the strengths of the Rotman School with its leadership in healthcare management research through its Centre for Health Sector Strategy, led by Prof. Golden, as well existing connections with the wider University and the global healthcare community including the proximately to Toronto’s medical discovery district. The Centre, in partnership with Rotman Executive Programs, is Canada’s leading academic provider of healthcare executive programs, and offers health sector programs, which equip professionals with the knowledge and business skills to lead and manage their organizations effectively in a complex field that is constantly evolving.

The Rotman School currently offers a major in Health Sector Management for students in the School’s Full-Time, Morning and Evening MBA programs. It focuses on management in health care delivery systems, pharmaceutical and biotechnology sales and marketing, life sciences product commercialization, and related consulting and financial industries. The major also introduces students to various regulatory bodies and procedures in the health sector.

The new program also continues the Rotman School’s record of pioneering new initiatives in executive education as the home of Canada’s first Executive MBA and first Global Executive MBA programs.
